Research Topics
Research Interests
Membrane Separations. Purified and functional biological components from agricultural commodities and fermentation broths; upgrading waste streams and effluents; separation and recovery of fermentation broth components. Process engineering and modeling. Current projects include MF, UF, NF, RO, PV, and ED processes.
Bioprocessing. Bioreactor design, including high-performance bioreactors for enzymatic and microbial conversion processes; immobilized enzymes and whole cells; enzymatic modification of proteins. Process design for fermentation-based higher-value products. Downstream processing; cell harvesting; product purification and isolation.
Food Processing. Process and product development for dairy, cereals, oilseeds, and other industries.
The Department of Food Science also operates three pilot-plants devoted to food processing and engineering (22,000 sq. ft.), bioprocessing and membrane separations (5000 sq. ft.), and oilseeds and cereals (5000 sq. ft.). They contain state-of-the-art pilot-scale equipment and supporting analytical capabilities. These facilities are available to industries for use on a fee-paid basis and/or for commercial testing agreements.
